To find out, I conducted a real-world experiment.

I tested 7 of the most popular AI website builders using the exact same prompt, then compared the results against a website I built myself using WordPress after more than six years of professional web design experience.

The results were surprising.

For this comparison, I used only the free versions (where possible) to keep the test fair.

• A professionally built WordPress website (my own benchmark)

Every tool received the exact same prompt describing a landscaping business called Green Leaf Landscaping.

This ensured every builder had the same challenge.

Canva surprised me.

Although it’s not widely known as a website builder, it managed to create a clean one-page website with:

• Testimonials
• Gallery
• Contact section

The biggest advantage was how incredibly easy it was to edit. Changing images and text took only seconds.

However, the design felt generic, and the website lacked multiple pages.

Pros

• Easy editing
• Fast generation
• Beginner friendly

Cons

• Generic stock images
• Only one page
• Limited depth

Unfortunately, Same.dev didn’t complete the challenge.

The free credits ran out before the website could finish generating, meaning users would need to upgrade before seeing the final result.

Because this review focused on free AI website builders, Same.dev couldn’t be fairly evaluated.

Lovable completely exceeded expectations.

Out of every AI website builder tested, it produced the most complete website.

It automatically generated:

The design looked modern, polished and surprisingly close to something a professional designer would build.

Hostinger Horizon Review

Hostinger Horizon impressed me with its smooth animations and polished interface.

The AI generated a responsive website complete with:

• Contact page

One thing I particularly liked was the subtle animations throughout the website.

The only downside was that the overall visual design wasn’t as attractive as Lovable.

Hostinger’s traditional AI Website Builder performed reasonably well but didn’t stand out.

Because everything is built inside WordPress using Elementor, making changes is straightforward.

• Easy customization
• Elementor compatibility
• Full ownership

• Requires tweaking after generation

Finally, I compared all the AI builders against a professional website created using a premium WordPress theme.

Like many professional developers today, I didn’t start from scratch.

Instead, I used a high-quality premium theme, imported the demo, and customized it.

This approach is how many agencies deliver websites efficiently while maintaining professional quality.

The result included:

AI website builders have improved dramatically.

For simple websites, they can save hours of work.

will still benefit from hiring an experienced website designer.

The best approach today is to combine AI with professional expertise rather than relying on AI alone.

For serious business websites, however, WordPress remains my top recommendation because it offers flexibility, ownership, scalability, and long-term value.

AI is becoming an excellent assistant—but it’s not yet a complete replacement for professional web designers.
